St. Paul, Minnesota

The multi-modal Smith Avenue Transit Center was planned as a central element in St. Paul’s redevelopment of its western gateway to downtown. The Center is a critical element in this key area, where entertainment, sports, office, and medical districts come together. It has been designed as part of a comprehensive urban planning effort that considered the needs of retail development, entertainment venues, and the burgeoning office and housing stock in the vicinity.

As architect, planner, and structural engineer for the City’s team, Collaborative Design Group developed a project that provides a comfortable and secure environment for event goers, pedestrians, parking patrons, and bus customers within a convenient walk to St. Paul’s businesses and entertainment venues. The exuberant design serves as a landmark and gateway to downtown. The new facility features 600 public parking spaces for event and contract parking, bicycle lockers, innovative public art installations, and a layover facility for 16 Metro Transit and charter buses, including a passenger boarding area, information displays, and a bus driver rest area.
